Big Trucks Benefiting Special Olympics

GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE: Long known for its cruise-in style, Geneva-on-the-Lake will play host to some really big rigs in late June with the Class 8 on the Lake Truck Show. The show is being sponsored by Truckers Helping Hands and will be held June 24 – 25, 2011 in the RV Resorts at Indian Creek Campgrounds (4710 Lake Road East, Geneva on the Lake). If you plan on staying at the Indian Creek Campgrounds (make reservations by May 1, and mention the Class8 on the Lake and receive a 10% discount). After May 1st, its first come, first served.

The 2-day event will feature lots of family fun, including:

  • Live Music
  • Benefit BBQ
  • Benefit Auction
  • Events for the Kids
  • Parade-of-Lights

Did we mention trucks would be involved?

Of course there will be show-stopping pickups, but tricked out bobtails, semi’s, antique trucks, truck and trailer combos, plus special semi interiors. This will be a judged event and trucks will be coming from all over. So if you’re into trucks, and who isn’t, you’ll want to reserve those dates and plan on making it a big Friday and Saturday in beautiful Ashtabula County.

Lest we forget that the purpose of the show is for the benefit of the Ashtabula County Special Olympics. Make plans now to attend.

Schoenbrunn Village Fair

SCHOENBRUNN VILLAGE: October 16 and 17th, will be the Schoenbrunn Village Colonial Trade Fair will be open for business on the site of the partially reconstructed Delaware-Moravian Village that existed here from 1772 – 1777. Seventeen reconstructed cabins will provide the backdrop for traders and visitors. Participants will be in period costume dress.

Part of the weekend’s activity will be reconstructing one of the cabins during the weekend activities by folks not only dressed in 18th Century attire suitable for the frontier, but they will also be using common tools that might have been used on the frontier (no Black&Decker’s here).

Coshocton Balloon Festival

COSHOCTON, OHIO: The 2010 Frontier Hot Air Balloon Festival is scheduled for June 11 – 13, 2010. Friday will feature a lift off from the fairgrounds between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday has a fly-in to the fairgrounds from points determined by the balloon pilots beginning at sunrise with arrivals at or near the fairgrounds. In the evening there will again be another liftoff from the fairgrounds between 6 and 7. Sunday will feature another fly-in.

There will be a midway at the fairgrounds, music (Timothy Paul, Friday; Phil Dirt & the Dozers, Saturday) and a tractor pull on Sunday (12:00 – 1:00)

You might want to also check out Roscoe Village, a restored 1800s canal town that features period costumes, and lots of shopping and good food.

Ohio Civil War Collectors Show & Display

MANSFIELD, OHIO: The Annual Ohio Civil War Collectors Show will be this weekend at the Richland County Fairgrounds. The event encompasses 7 buildings, 750 tables featuring military items and memorabilia for sale, to buy or trade. There is a $5.00 admission, with free parking on the grounds. This years event includes not only Civil War, but all military items from 1775 through 1945.

There will also be a 30-gun artillery show, and a 6-gun firing demonstration over this 2 day event. A number of period demonstrations and re-enactors will also be on display including a President Lincoln presentation, period music by Camp Chase Fife & Drum corp, as well as daily door prizes.

Swasey Observatory Open House

DENISON UNIVERSITY, NEWARK, OHIO: As part of the ongoing celebration of the 100th anniversary of Swasey Observatory, the Denison University Department of Physics and Astronomy will host an open house beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23, at the observatory (300 Chapel Drive). The open house will focus on the Moon, Saturn, and Mars, and is free and open to the public.

Denison’s Swasey Observatory opened in June 1910. If skies are clear, visitors will use the Warner & Swasey 9” refracting telescope in the observatory’s dome and at least one 8” reflecting telescope set up at ground level. The telescopes will be accessible until 11 p.m. In the event of inclement weather on Friday, the open house will be rescheduled for the following night, Saturday, April 24. Visitors should call the observatory at 740-587-6477 where a message will be left by 5 p.m. if the event will be canceled or rescheduled.

‘The Art of Photography,’ free exhibit at The Works

NEWARK:  The Works in downtown Newark will feature, “The Art of Photography: A Collection of Photos by Nathan Reich,” November 20 through January 10 in The Works Central Gallery, 50 S. Second Street in Newark.

An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, November 20, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the gallery. The public is invited. Admission to the reception and gallery is free.
 
In addition to being an accomplished photographer, Reich has served as The Works’ Graphic Designer for the past two years.
 
Originally from Marietta, Ohio, Reich now lives in Columbus. The photographs in the show cover a diverse assortment of subject matter from traditional landscapes to his recent explorations of color in fluid forms.
 
“I’ve been experimenting with releasing colored dyes into clear water in a large glass tank and photographing the delicate patterns. The result are very neat – and each person sees something different in the images,” Reich said.
 
The show will feature several limited-edition images printed on special, highly reflective metallic paper designed to make the images exceptionally crisp and vibrant. All prints are for sale.
 
The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology is a family fun and learning destination located at 55 S. 1st Street in Newark, Ohio. Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival

COSHOCTON, OHIO: This FREE family event has been a favorite for the past 27 years and is the oldest hot air balloon festival in Ohio.  Enjoy musical entertainment, carnival rides, festive foods, arts and crafts booths and of course, hot air balloons.  Spectators enjoy watching 20 or more hot air balloons taking off, landing and the popular “night glow”.  All these events take place in Coshocton, again named in Midwest Living magazine as “One of the 100 top towns to visit.”

The festival will feature plenty of live entertainment, but the main events will be the balloons which will include fly-ins and fly-outs from the fairgrounds. On Saturday night there will also be a Night Glow at dusk which always spectacular as the balloons remained tethered, but inflated with their gas burners lighting the colorful balloons.
