Above: the full size orbiter replica, Explorer, on display at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

With NASA’s Space Shuttle program coming to an end, retirement homes were needed for the old space shuttle orbiters. One of those homes was hoped to be the massive National Air Force Museum in Dayton. Of all the shuttles, only 2 remained without a designed landing spot. Hopes of acquiring a shuttle orbiter in Dayton were running high. Dayton which was home to the original fly boys (the Wright Brothers) would be a logical choice for NASA, but then in recent years, NASA has displayed an uncanny lack of sense in their increasingly political posturing.

Dayton is just one of 29 locations hoping to bring home a shuttle orbiter for display. But there is a little more to it than just putting in a written request. Originally there were 5 orbiters: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour plus the prototype Enterprise (originally called “Constitution” the name was changed after a successful write-in campaign to change the name in honor of the Star Trek series). This vehicle was only used to test the atmospheric flight characteristics of the shuttle design. Challenger and Columbia were both tragically lost, leaving just 3 orbiters and the 4 full-scale replicas of the shuttle: Explore, Adventure, America and Pathfinder.

So does Ohio’s National Air Force Museum stand a chance? Maybe. Only U.S. museums and educational institutions are eligible. The chosen location also must have an indoor display area suitable for the noble shuttle. Plus, the organization has to have a check in hand for the estimated $28 million required for shipping and handling. NASA wants the chosen receivers to be able to take shipment by May, 2012.
