Ohio's Scenic Byways Program

In 1996, The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) created a program designating Ohio's Scenic Byways. By definition these are specific corridors along specific areas within the state that provide outstanding scenic, natural, historic, archaeological, cultural or have special recreational qualities.

Under the program, county or local governments nominate notable areas to ODOT. The local governmental body then develops a plan for the promotion and marketing of the byway's special qualities. ODOT will then assist the local effort by designating the area as a Scenic Byway which means the route will have official signs along the route stating that, as well as publishing the route on the official state highway map.

What this program does is encourage communities to preserve and protect areas of special interest and enables them to build specific tourism interest in areas under their jurisdiction.
