In 1854, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote his poem Catawba Wine, to memorialize Ohio's first vineyards in the Cincinnati area. Today their are wineries located in all areas of the state offering something for everyone's taste and budget.
Wineries produce wine, vineyards grow grapes. You can have a winery and not grow your own grapes, and you can have a vineyard and not produce wine. Some wineries may not have their own grape plants, but secure their grapes from other local vineyards.
Bottled wines produced by a winery that grew its own grapes will be identified on the bottle by stating: "Estate Grown".
Most wineries will offer special events or wine tasting festivals. These are an excellent way to sample many different types of wine for a reasonable price.
