Ohio's Historical Markers

If you've traveled around the state you've probably seen one the historical markers. The Ohio Historical Markers identify, commemorate and honor the important people, places and events that have contributed to the state's rich history. The Ohio Historical Markers Program, administered by the Ohio Historical Society, is a vital educational tool, informing residents and visitors about significant aspects of Ohio's past. Currently there are over 1200 historical markers in the state.

Manufacturing Ohio's Historic Markers

All of Ohio's Historic Markers are made right here in Ohio at a Marietta factory named Sewah Studios. Sewah Studios was founded in 1927 by E. M. Hawes and began operation in what was formerly an organ factory on the west side of historic Marietta. In naming the company, Mr. Hawes spelled his last name backwards, and, for no particular reason, he also added the word Studios.

Reading a Marker

In addition to the text describing the historic marker, there are also the names of individuals and organizations that sponsored the particular marker and the year the marker was erected. This information is included at the bottom of the marker. Sponsors may also choose to attach a piece of custom artwork or metal plate to the marker. These can often be found in the corners and might include portraits or emblems.

In the lower right is a number. This indicates the sequence number of the sign installed in a particular county.

Example Above: Marker #7-64

7 indicates that this particular marker is the 7th marker to be erected in the county and 64 indicates that the marker is located in Perry County, which in an alphabetical list of counties, Perry County is the 64th county in that list.
