Merry-Go-Round Museum
Located in beautiful downtown Sandusky, is the Merry-Go-Round Museum devoted to the passing past-time of entertainment that was common in almost every community in years gone by. Enjoy a fun and relaxed atmosphere while touring the Merry-Go-Round Museum, where you'll learn about the history and art of the carousel. Hear an authentic "oom pa pa" band organ playing that you won't believe isn't amplified. Plus, you'll see a wide assortment of the "painted ponies" on display.
The Merry-Go-Round Museum offers guided tours of their current exhibitions, plus, each season they give their exhibits a new theme that makes it fun to return. Find out the difference between English carousel's and American and the little tricks used by the makers of these beautiful creations to cut down on expenses without sacrificing on image.
The Merry-Go-Round Museum maintains an active program of restoring antique carousel figures and related items, using tools similar to those used by master carousel carvers of the golden age. Carvers are often available on the museum's exhibit floor to demonstrate carving techniques, give explanations about the construction of carousel figures and discuss the art of the carousel. More than 500 hours of hand-carving will go into a carousel animal before it is ready for paint by an artist that will hand-paint the animal using historic brush techniques.
The Merry-Go-Round Museum is a great place to take the kids, but an even better place to take the adults. The museum is set up for both so kids can enjoy the hand carved figures and the adults can appreciate a time gone by.
Kids will also love the numerous rubbing stations where they can take paper and crayon and create a rubbing of their favorite carousel figure. There is also a gift shop that offers a variety of merry-go-round related items.
